Have to.Choose to.
Take one thing you feel you have to do, feel what that framing does in your body, then rebuild it as a choice you'd actually want. About five minutes. Choice is clean fuel.
What do you feel you have to do?
Write it the way it sounds in your head, need and should included. Small or big, both work.
Say it out loud. Where does it land?
Just notice. Nothing to fix yet. Most people feel weight on the shoulders, arms or chest, like being puppeted around.
Whose voice is the have-to?
Almost nothing is a real have-to. You need water and food. Even paying a $5 tax is a choice: you choose it to keep the $495 fine away. When the alternative is worse, you're already choosing.
You chose not to. That counts.
A conscious no is cleaner than a passive maybe. It stops the open loop from eating baseline energy every time you remember it.
If saying "no" contracts you more than the task did, the no isn't clean yet. Go back and choose it, or take the feeling to your reactivity practice.
Rewrite it. Same task, your call.
What do you stand to gain?
The unhealthy snack wins because "it tastes good" is concrete. "It's good for me" is a theorem with no arguments. Write the arguments. Aim for three or more, all about you.
Who else wins when you win?
"My parents expect it" turns into "I get to make them proud." Same people, same task, different fuel. Skip it if nobody comes to mind.
What's the opportunity in this?
Every framing has one. What could this open up, near or far? The pattern you're changing counts too: practising choice-energy instead of need-energy.
Read it all back. How heavy now?
If you can take action, build the energy. Keep the step so small it would be odd not to do it.
Still heavy. Reframing works on the fuel, not on old pain. If you can't take action, deal with the feeling first. Pick the sentence that contracts you most, then intone it and feel it until it softens.
Use your reactivity practice tool or session to run it. Come back here once it's a 3 or lower.
From have-to to choose-to
Keep it going
Set a phone reminder every few hours that just says: "What do I choose right now?" The more reps of this, the less you'll need the tool.
